EVOS and the Prince William Sound Long Term Environmental Monitoring Program

چکیده
ABSTRACT Following the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill (EVOS), Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council began Long-Term Environmental Monitoring Program (LTEMP) in 1993 to track hydrocarbon chemistry of recovering sediments and mussel tissues along path (PWS) across Northern Gulf Alaska (NGOA) region. The program also samples sites near Alyeska Marine Terminal (AMT) within Port Valdez, primarily monitor tanker operations resulting treatment discharge oil-contaminated ballast water. Over last 28 years, has documented EVOS oil's disappearance at spill-impacted (albeit buried still exists a few unique sheltered locations PWS). Within Port, tanker- diesel-spill incidents have been over but all were minor with recovery times < 1 yr. Of highest concern permitted chronic release weathered from tankers' ballast-water that is treated discharged (AMT). In earlier years (1980s–90s), volumes reaching 17–18 MGD, up barrel finely dispersed would be released into fjord daily. two decades, total petrogenic inputs (TPAH43) declined as measured monitored mussels sediments. This trend reflects combination decreased North Slope (ANS) production thus, less traffic, plus transition double-hulled tankers segregated tanks, improved treatment-facility efficiency removing PAH. From 2018 collections, mussel-tissue concentrations eleven LTEMP stations (within well PWS NGOA regions) below method detection limits similar laboratory blanks (TPAH43 44 ng/g dry wt.). At these low background levels, elevated TPAH values 2020 incident easily detected three stations.

The Prince William Sound Risk Assessment
After the grounding of the Exxon Valdez and its subsequent oil spill, all parties with interests in Prince William Sound (PWS) were eager to prevent another major pollution event. While they implemented several measures to reduce the risk of an oil spill, the stakeholders disagreed about the effectiveness of these measures and the potential effectiveness of further proposed measures. They forme...

Recent research has shown that the advective regime connecting the northern Gulf of Alaska (GOA) with Prince William Sound (PWS) may affect recruitment and nutritional processes in Fishes (Kline 1999b). Accordingly, food webs are subject to changes in carbon flow occurring between GOA and PWS. This project is: (1) conducting a retrospective analysis of GOA production shifts since EVOS, and (2) ...
متن کاملFish Assemblages in Nearshore Habitats of Prince William Sound, Alaska
We sampled fish at eight locations in western Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska, in April, July, and September 2006, and July 2007, to identify species assemblages and habitat use. At each location, fish were sampled with a 37-m long variable mesh beach seine in three nearshore habitats: bedrock outcrops, eelgrass meadows, and cobble beaches with kelp. A total of 49,060 fish representing 45 sp...
متن کاملWinter Philopatry of Harlequin Ducks in Prince William Sound, Alaska
We used capture-mark-recapture data to assess winter philopatry by Harlequin Ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) in Prince William Sound, Alaska, during winters 1995–1997 and 2000–2001. Philopatry was quantified using homing rates, which were estimated as the proportion of birds recaptured at their original site out of all recaptured birds. Between-year homing rates of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.87–1.00) an...
